Hairdressing is a profession I’ve been in for over twenty years, and it’s one of the most rewarding professions there are. I love making people look good (and feel even better), but there are some terms that you might come across when discussing hairdressing that can be confusing if you don’t know what they mean. In this entry, we’ll go over some basic hairdressing vocab so that you can better understand what’s going on with your hair next time you go to get a cut or color!

Hairdressing
Hairdressing is the art and science of styling hair. Hairdressers are also known as hairdressers, stylists or barbers; they style their clients’ hair for a living. Hairdressing has been practiced in almost every culture since ancient times, when it was used to maintain hygiene, beautify appearance and improve self-esteem. Today’s modern salon industry encompasses many different roles within its workforce: from hairdressers to colour technicians, makeup artists and massage therapists.
The personal service offered by hairdressers makes this an exciting career choice as you get to meet new people every day while working with them on their image – which is ultimately yours too! As well as having excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), you’ll need good eye-hand coordination when using scissors or clippers so that you can make sure each cut is perfect before moving onto the next step (such as blow drying).
Scissors
Scissors are a tool used in hairdressing to cut hair. There are many different types of scissors, each with its own purpose and use.
The most common types of scissors have blades that are sharpened on both edges and are made from either carbon or stainless steel, although some can be made out of other materials such as titanium or tungsten carbide (a very hard metal).
Scissors come in different sizes depending on what type of work they will be used for: smaller ones tend to be used for finer details while larger ones can handle longer pieces better. Scissor handles vary according to personal preference but it’s worth noting that a good quality pair should feel comfortable in your hand when cutting so that you don’t lose any dexterity when using them!
Haircut
A haircut is the process of cutting or trimming hair. A style of haircutting, it can also be considered a form of personal grooming.
A haircut can be done in a salon or barbershop, but it can also refer to making quick changes to your own hair at home with common tools like scissors or clippers.
Cut
A cut is a way of styling hair. It can be straight or curly, short or long, layered and styled in many different ways.
A bob is a type of haircut that gives you lots of volume at the top but is shorter at the back where it reaches your neckline. To create this look for yourself follow these steps:
Use your fingers to brush through your wet hair until it’s smooth
Part off-center from ear to ear – don’t worry if there are gaps! We’ll fix those later with some texturizing products (like mousse).
Using an old toothbrush with soft bristles works well too! Just make sure not to apply pressure because then you’ll end up with frizzy flyaways instead of smooth waves which we want here today 🙂
Trim
Trim is a cut that is shorter than a haircut, but longer than a trim. Trim can also be used as an alternative to “trim” when you’re talking about someone’s hair.
For example: “I’m going to get my hair trimmed this weekend.”
Wash
Wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner.
Use a masque or hair mask, if you have one. It’s good for your hair to use one every once in awhile!
Brush or comb through your hair with a brush or comb to make sure it’s detangled. If you have long hair, use a wide tooth comb instead of a regular one so that it doesn’t get tangled as easily!
Blowdry or blow-dry or blow-dryer/blow-drier
Blow-dryer is a hair dryer.
Blow-dry is a blow-dry.
Blow-dryer is a blow-drier (or just “blow-drier”).
Towel dry or towel dryer or toweling/towel
Towel drying is the process of drying your hair with a towel. Towel dryer is the machine used to dry your hair, and toweling/towel is the material that you use to dry your hair.
A quick guide to some common hairdressing terms.
Hairdressing is a beauty profession. Hairdressers, barbers and stylists are all hairdressers. They work in salons, or they may be self-employed and work out of their own homes.
Hairdressing tools include scissors (used to cut hair), combs (used to style it) and clippers (for cutting off layers).
A haircut is a particular style of hair – for example, shoulder length bob with fringe; long straight locks that curl at the ends; thick curls worn down over your shoulders…the list goes on! A trim is an abbreviation for ’trim’ which means removing damaged or split ends from your tresses so they look healthy again!
